i have a 1995 70 hp evinrude with oil injection.M otor smokes and mis fires when started after short time storage .say, even two or three days .I have reason to believe it is running oil rich on start-up.after bumping choke button repeatedly motor will finally settle out and runs fine all day.i've been told that oil/fuel pump could be seeping oil into carbs or to fuel side of carb inlets when sitting up.Has anyone experienced this problem and if so what is the remedy.I've also been told by a local boat shop that the oil/fuel pump rebuild kit is just for the fuel half of the unit and that the oil half was unavailable or simply could not be rebuilt without purchasing the whole unt for around $240.00.Any info on my problem is appreciated

Whats your start routine.Do you squeeze both the oil and fuel bulbs?

oil system stays primed .bulb is always firm.I was even told that when rig was purchased new. they said the only time you have to reprime the oil sytem is when its been disconected or run empty.

Yeh but are you squeezing the fuel bulb? At start up if the fuel has drained back into the tank (bad primer bulb )or evaporated from the carbs , the vro maybe pumping more oil into the carbs before the fuel catches up with it .

If you think I'm doing that sorry, I'm not.I'm trying to give a possible cause to your problem. A freind had a problem like you are having and it was the primer bulb.Try to remember this is a open forum and if you don't want opinions from all the people that use it you might want to change the topic to "READ MY MIND AND DON"T ASK ME ANY QUESTIONS"

what I was attempting to do is to find someone who has experienced a "similar problem" so I can determine whether the the vro pump has a perpencity for failure. I thought it was obvious from my description that prime bulbs or fuel delivery problems did'nt exist since after smoky start-up motor runs fine through all operating situations, idle, off idle ,top-end etc...

of course the VRO is prone to failure! you hear about it all the time. you should have ripped that sucker outta there and went with the regular fuel pump by now. mix your own gas. its the only way.

Hope this dosn't make you mad, but I agree with Capt. Greg. VRO's were not all that reliable in these years. Even the Coast Guard was disabling their VRO systems and going to pre-mix.

It does'nt make me mad at all.I'm just trying to get whatever needs to be done and do it right. As for eliminating the vro system I'm still not clear on the procedure. One feedback suggested that i put a conventional fuel pump on the motor.are there optional ones available that hook up to the existing wiring?I was under the impression that the fuel pump that was available for my motor year was the one that it is presently equipped with...the fuel/oil pump assy.
