Hello ,

I have a Merc Mark 55 thunderbolt I was told and the title says it was a 1962, How ever after doing some research I found out that motor was not made in the 60s but in the 50s.

Any way when I take my throttle down low enough to change from reverse to forward or the other way around the motor stalls. It dose not seem to be enough throttle to keep the motor running. But the safety in the control box will not switch with out have my throttle at a certain point which as I stated is not enough to keep the motor running. This Has proven to be a very dangerous problem and made docking and trailering and very quite a challenge. Any ideas on how to fix this would be great. Thank you!!

Carburetor cleaning is in order. Do not use spray cleaners or damage can occur. Carbs must be removed and stripped and soaked. I recommend Gunk Carb and Parts cleaner. Follow the instructions on the can. Might be difficult to get new rebuild parts but there are several houses that carry vintage parts.
This should correct your idling problem. I would be inclined to do a compression check and spark check before anything else.

Thank you I have had compression and spark test done when I first got it all was good. They told me that they cleaned the carbs but who knows if they did thanks for the info!

I have been told many times that the carbs have been cleaned and ignored it. Saved me a lot of pain by doing that.
