motor stalls

when i put the boat in reverse the motor quits running. 89 mercruiser 2.5 liter

MJTTrap,does it work Ok in Fwd?What about when idling?Give us a bit more info if you can.

yes it runs fine at idle and when you put it in drive

Not a 100% sure but I have seen other responses on this site with symptons similar to yours.I believe (and don't quote me on this) everyone talks about an interrupt switch which stutters the engine when shifting gears so its easier to engage.It sounds like yours (if you have one) may need to be adjusted.Hopfully the experts on here will see your post and help correct me if I'm wrong.Let us know how you make out.
