motor stalls

i have a 89 larson bowrider with a i/o 2.5 liter.when i put it in reverse the motor shuts off immediately.idle and foward it runs fine.

Your interupter sw. is causing the cut out.You may need an adjustment of your shift cable or replacement if that doesn't work.Try lubing all the pivot points and the cable first.

It is located on the side of the engine where the lower shift cable (which comes from the outdrive) connects up with the cable from the shifter. The problem isn't the switch more than likely, it is probably a stiff lower shift cable causing the problem. But here is a link to adjust it:<br />cable adjustment

ok i tried the adjustment and i get foward fine but never can get reverse to catch,i get it to a point where its trying to engage but doesn't quite catch, the propellar never locks up by turning by hand.haven't tried it under power to see if the motor still cuts off.
