can you give us more info as if the motor has been sitting for a long time , old fuel, compression, spark fuel pump,,,etc...., could be just a carb adj. but hard to tell at this moment.I just got done rebuilding an 63 18hp and i came here to get answers as well, I know a repair manual is a must.. !!!

new plugs and fresh fuel. New fuel line. Ran for about 2 minutes first time I tried. Now will only start wth choke and dies in a few seconds. Has set for a little while, maybe a year at most. Just tried it a few more times and will not start at all.

If I recall, this motor has the pressurized tank and Siamese hose. If so, make sure the tank is holding pressure. If it starts with choke, that suggests a fuel delivery problem, so start checking for air leaks, blockages, etc. in the fuel system.

How do I know if it is that type? The hose is just like the one at walmart with the pump bulb. The tank is plastic, so it is not the original. It was run with this set up.

BTW, I put a can of see foam in the gas to clean the carb. Could this be the problem?

I found the problem! It was the fuel line. Had a pin hole at the pump and I just kept over looking it. I found it by pumping the bulb continuously while looking. Cut it off and put back on. Running fine now. Just think I need a water pump. Don't see any water coming out anywhere. But I don't see where it should come from either. Thanks for all the help guys.

Sea Foam won't help if the carb is crapped up. It cleans carbon from the firing passages. You don't have a pressurized tank, but the problem is still a fuel delivery issue. Make sure the hose is not leaking at any of the joints, the motor connector is OK. Then there's the fuel pump, its screen , etc.

Thanks for the info! Found it. How do I clean the carb without taking it apart??

Re: motor starts with choke then dies.

you will have to take the carb off to clean it properly, its not a hard thing to do pretty simple really, but i definitly recommend getting a manual, it will pay for itself. get a carb rebuild kit and do it yourself. If you dont see a spray of water coming out of your engine within a few seconds dont run it!!!,,, you should have a spray of water coming out of the 3 or 4 little holes midway up the backside port when you first start it. the water pump isnt working if its not.
