Motor still hesitating

I am still having a problem with my 1969 omc sterndrve. On sunday I took it out for 1.5 hours. After an hour or so the motor hesitated. It did this 5-6 times (5-10 minutes apart but never actually died). When its not doing it the motor runs great and very smooth. So far I've installed a fuel/water seperator ,Changed inline fuel filters, hooked engine up to a portable gas tank and disconnected the Tech. (my mechanic thought maybe it was shorting out). The one thing I really noticed on Sunday was the smell of unburnt gas right after it would hesitate. The next thig my mechanic has said to try is replacing the coil. Any other thoughts

Has it had a good tune-up lately? Too much fuel could be from a fuel pump problem or maybe the carb needs a rebuild. <br />An indication of a pump problem would be gas in the site tube.
