I am trying to put a 1989 Evinrude 25 HP, remote steer, electric start on a boat that had a 1997 Evinrude 40 hp on it. The remote shift/ignition box and wiring harness and steering cables were left on the boat. I have the "big red plug " from the 25 HP- both ends - and the wiring cable that ran from the motor to the gear shift/ignition box, but the cable was just cut off with no terminal ends. I am trying to utilize the existing boat wiring harness- the boat that had the 40 hp on it- and tie in the wiring from the 25 hp motor.

The wires coming from the 25 hp motor are as follows: Brown, Purple, Purple/white, yellow/red, black/yellow, Gray. Black, and Red/purple.

From the boat that had the 40 hp on it coming from the gear shift box to the back of the boat there are three plugs.
First plug, a square male plug that has the following wires: Black/yellow, Black/white, Red/purple, Purple, Yellow/red, and purple /white.

Second plug is square female with wires as follows: Brown/yellow, Brown/black, Brown, Gray, Brown/orange, Black.

The third plug is a triangle shaped female plug as follows: Tan/orange, Green/white, Blue/white.
The boat has a speedometer, tachometer, and volt meter, aeriated live well, bilge pump, navigation lights.

Should I just cut off the plugs from the boat and match to the same colors as are coming from the 25 hp motor?

Any help or suggestions will be much appreciated !!

The remote control box with the red plug, (series 77) went from 1977 to 1995. Not sure if that other box will even work so I would at least find the color code diagram for each box. Alternative is to just buy a used red plug box.

I read this guy's post and then googled up omc wiring harness adapters old to new. There's a bunch of adapters but they are the opposite of what you want to do. When people upgraded their motors omc made it so they could adapt to the old box.

So you could dig more and see if they sell one the other way. Maybe call cdi and ask them. They made some of the adapters.

Pretty sure buying the older box might be better.

Before you chop up your harness, Look to see If CDI electronics makes an adaptor.

OK, so basically this guy is using new plug connectors, but a plain old spade connector would do the same thing if you put one on each wire and matched the colors. Unless I am missing something. Thanks for the video.

Yes, as a bush fix you could just splice. I thought it helpful information that it could be done and how to match up. Let us know if it works.

I guess my triangle shaped plug with all the brown wires is all for trim and tilt-which the motor I am installing does not have. But, yes it is informative info. Thanks for sharing it.

Trim wires should be red, blue and green. Blue for sky (up) green for grass(down). Brown I believe is for temp....not sure your motor has that.
