I have an 82 mercury 50 hp outboard. I am wanting to swap to a 79 mercury 35 outboard engine. Both are remote steer/control. Will my 50 hp controls work with the 35? If so, how do you disconnect the control unit power supply cable from the motor. And how do you disconnect the throttle/shift cables at the motor?

The mechanical throttle and shift cables should work fine, as will fuel and steering. The electrical will work if they are the same style. The older electrical had a quick disconnect plug that was on the outside of the starboard side of the motor. The newer style was an internal round plug, under the cowling.

Hopefully your two motors use the same style.
