Motor too heavy or not

I found a 1966 model number VXL 12R johnson 60HP runs great low hours ,I was wondering if this motor is too heavy for my 65 starcraft arrow and is this a good motoir ?

I think the 3 cyl loopers came out in 68 or '69. If that is what you are looking at I'd say no biggie. Weight not that much more than the 40 you have on there and lots of boats of the era of that size ran them and 65's and 70's. Your transom has a splash well which adds a lot of strength to the top of the transom and that is where the most effect of weight and thrust would be noticed. If it's the old style "fat 60" then it "might". One thing for sure. If you are looking at a 3 cyl. it will be loop charged and the difference in fuel economy as compared to the cross flow induction system on what you currently have or the fat 60 is impressive. Worth finding one.

I could not detemine from the model number and the internet whether the VXL 12R motor is a V4 or not. If it is an inline motor, it will probably be fine on that boat. I would watch the power increase and note any handling issues.

A V4 motor is a lot heavier than that big twin. It may be too heavy....

What HP is the boat rated for? That will determine the correct answer.

Wouldn't be my first choice. Some tough to find parts for those old V4s. Ideally, if we're talking Johnson/Evinrudes of higher (greater than 40) horespowers, I'd recommend sticking with '73 or newer. Mercuries are a little spotty on parts support for older models but I think late 70's and up should be pretty decent.
