pinto - Check for an exhaust leak around the base of the engine. If your carb is sucking in exhaust gasses it may not be getting enough oxygen. That would account for it running better with the carb door open. I would also suggest that it is time to soak and rebuild the carb.

The reason it won't run with the front cover closed is because exhaust gases are being sucked into the hood. Your engine has a outer shroud around the exhaust housing. If you were to take the back cover of this shroud off, you will see a large rubber donut seal around the exhaust housing close to the bottom of the housing, and shroud. When the seal comes apart, or cracks with age, exhaust gases are pulled up the shround, and into the hood from the draft created by the carb. I don't know if this seal is still available. If you can flood the engine with the primer bulb, it is probably time for a carb rebuild. As for the smoke, use a good grade oil. The newer oils from Bombardier is supposed to help, plus give it a good tune-up if the rest of the engine is sound. Start with a compression test.
