motor turns one direction further than the other

I just bought a 1990 Hydra sports VS150T and noticed that the motor will not turn as far one direction as the other. It has a dual cable set up. If you disconnect the bracket that is attached to the end of the cables the motor freely turns full lock to lock. You can turn the steering wheel lock to lock and check the cable travel. The only way to get the motor all the way one direction is to flip bracket around. However, when you do this the travel in the opposite direction becomes limited. Flip the bracket around and the problem reverses itself. There is no adjustment in the cables that I can see. Any ideas?

Re: motor turns one direction further than the other

I can't tell for sure from your photo, but it looks like you've got room to move the steering rod back one hole in the steering arm. That would increase the distance the engine moves as you turn the wheel, and might get you closer to where you want to be. Here's a photo of mine:

ALSO, just in case you're not familiar with adjusting dual cable steering.... The idea with dual cables is that one cable is supposed to be in tension and the other in compression, this will minimize the amount of play in the engine and minimize engine play as a contributor to chine walk. To do that you'll adjust the front steering tube one way or the other until the steering starts to get tight from the cables binding, then back off to the point where the steering gets free. AND depending on which way you adjust it you might actually help out your issue with the engine not going far enough.
