i have an 87 bayliner bass boat with a force 125, my tag says that the boat is rated for a max of 150hp. this maybe a dumb question but, does that mean any 150? i know that force was bayliners motor and they have a 150 but force motors have less hp than the motor says, like mine only pushes 88.4 hp according to the tag on the motor. so if i were to put say a mercury or johnson 150 on it would it be ok?

Any 150 will keep you legal, but make absolutely sure the transom and stringers are sound.

Where the heck did 88.4 HP come from?? Your motor puts out less than 125 at the prop because it's rated at the powerhead (as were all motors of that vintage, IIRC).

i got the 88.4 hp from the tag on the back of the motor, it says 125hp at 5000 rpm then below that it says " iso rating 88.4hp at 5000 rpm"

Re: motor up grade

I have a little right now ,although last season I did not .I had a mech go over the motor etc and it seems to handle differently and not for the better maybe some adjustments are needed.I was looking at the johnsons for a repower around a 95- 2000 mainly the oceanpro's or evinrude 150xp .Since the boat is an 87 I'm not going to repower with something newer.

It just idols a little high for my liking , and vibration at lower rpms could just need a good decarb. It's just harder to find that sweet spot when planing I had it all set up last season and now every things different . Even my throttle position has been changed It's like I have to start all over again. Oh well

Re: motor up grade

kforyou...well, my force 125 started to knock, so i have been looking for a new motor and just bought a 1998 mercury 150 efi for 1600 bucks with controls and oil tank. so my boat is rated for a 150, i will let you know how it runs as soon as i get it on

Re: motor up grade

yea thanks I'd like to hear how it goes.Don't know much about the mercury's was told to go for a johnny around a 95 . I hope it's a good repower for you maybe it could be a consideration for myself as they are generally cheaper then most others Did you have to change the hole positions?

Re: motor up grade

That's going to be a very nice upgrade! Just be aware that the Merc probably weighs more than the Force, so you may need to move things and/or people forward a little for optimal performance.

Re: motor up grade

I wonder if smart tabs would be beneficial in not having to move much foward

Re: motor up grade

not sure if i will need to move much forward. i am only gaining 106 pounds. the problem i had with the force is i had to run a hydrofoil because it porposed bad, but when i looked at the force trimmed all the way down it sat at the same angle or parallel with the transom, with the merc on and trimmed all the way down it sits at more of an angle with the lower unit closer to the boat. maybe i could move my 2 batteries to the front, if i need to.
i have hers alot of people with force motors having porposing problems and i wonder if it is because of the angle the motors sit on the boat.
eather way i think i am jumping around 62 hp more, due to the tag on my 125 that says iso 88.4hp @5000 rpm.
