Motor Up Or Down?

Should a trailered boat be stored with the motor up or down? Does it make any difference on the wear-and-tear of the carbs? I'm not referring to winterization, since here in South Louisiana, it rarely freezes, and boats usually get year round use (aren't we lucky!). Thanks for your assistance.

Re: Motor Up Or Down?

Not sure what motor you have....<br /><br />According to my Yamaha 4-stroke manual it says:<br /><br />"To prevent problems which can be caused by oil entering the cylinder from the sump, keep the engine in the vertical position when transporting and storing it"<br /><br />I wouldn't guess this is a problem with 2-strokes, but one of my 2-stroke manuals says to store it in a vertical position also, but it doesn't say why. It would allow all the water to drain out and keep the fuel from flooding back to the intake.

In the down position, your hydraulics are also better protected than tilted up. My motors hold more water tilted up than in the full down position as well.

Sorry. Should've been more specific. It's a 2002 90 hp Mercury, 2 stroke, carb.

No matter the motor or drive, store it vertical. Promotes drainage and less stress on the transom.<br />For transport, lift just enough to clear obstructions.
