OK, this isn't the worst problem to have!
Motor is a 1988 115 Yamaha. I started it for the first time in a few months and had trouble getting it to fire up until I thought to mess around with the kill switch, I took the clip out and pulled it all the way out, and it started right up. I let it run for a few minutes and tried to shut it off, it kept running. After several more attempts to shut it off I turned it quickly to the start position, starter hit the flywheel and shut it off. I know that can't be good, but it worked. I started and shut it down 4 or 5 times afterwards and it worked fine.
Do I have a short or what? And if this happens again what is the best way to shut it down?

Re: Motor won't shut off

check the wireing near the keyswitch,
that system works by shorting the white wire in the ign harness to the black(ground)wire in the harness to short the condensers in the CDI box to kill the ign system.so rather than hunting for a short(no spark) your going to be hunting for an open circuit.something in the keyswitch, emergency stop switch, enigne to switch harness or ign switch ground wire failed to make a connection.
in a no stop situation about the quickest way to shut it down is to pull the manual choke.
