I have a 87/88 Johnson 88 SPL o/b that will not start after it has been running. When I try the motor a few days later it starts right up without problem. When it will not start there is no spark. The fuel systems is fine, all the electrical connections, ecspecially grounds were checked, the kill switch and neuteral switch checked ok. Is it one of the power packs or temp sensor. Any suggestions? This motor has two power packs, can both be bad or is the a common denominator between the two like a switch or sensor?

Thanks for all the help guys... Followed the book and found a bad ignition switch with two M connections. One connection to the kill switch worked fine, the other M connection was grounding out killing the spark. Just a bad switch... Got to fish today. :)

awsome! what fish did you get? i got some flounders, but lost more than i landed, they kept running into high cane and buried up under the vegetation! i couldnt pull em outta there. they broke all my 15 lb flourocarbon leaders! its like trying to pull a 2x4 thru the marsh on a fishing pole!

Re: Motor won't start when warm

Hi.. I have kind of the same problem you did. I hope you can help me. I have a 89' 1.6L OMC Sea Drive V4... It starts ok, but when it gets hot it will just die.. And if I do get it started again..it will die when I put it in gear. Or if I get it started again it will idle like its running on 3 cylinders...I just replaced the power pack...I rebuilt the carbs.. I had the sink and link adjusted, pulled the heads and decarb... Funny thing is after it died on me and would not start again. I checked for spark on the water and it seemed not to have any. But when I got home I hooked up the flusher and started it..fired right up. Any input would be appreciated...Thanks.

Yo MeMalato,
There's a couple of things you can try.
1. With the enigne running on water hose and the muffs, heat up the power packs with a hair drier and see if that effects the way the engine runs.
2. Carry a squirt can of premix out with you and see if giving the carbs a shot of fuel causes the engine to pick up. One of those should give you a hint of what's going on.

g'luck & c/6

Hooty

Thanks for the info Hooty. Would a bad stator assembly or timing base senor assembly cause that sort of problem? So, if I squirt some premix in it and it fires up...fuel problem then? I'll try it but I don't think its a fuel problem...ignition I think. Thanks Hooty

I've just had the identical symptoms and suspect the powerpack can't abide the heat. I'm waiting for the shop to tell me.
