1976 Mercury 500-50hp serial #4418860 Ran fine last season. After this season's 1st.run took boat home to flush motor,& it will not start. So I replaced(4)old coils, with (4)new ones(I noticed a slight difference in the replacement coils, they lack a thin ground wire on the backside).Inspected & cleaned carbs. Have spark on all plugs.Compression on all cylinders is (110)psi.I tried a shot of WD 30 as advised by a member nothing ...What's the next trouble shooting step??

Re: motor wont start

fuel would be the next thing. try some starting fluid in the carbs. if it fires then you may have a fuel problem. inspect the hose, filter, and replace the primer bulb. its the cheapst start to finding the problem.

Re: motor wont start

First of all, NEVER use starting fluid on an outboard motor. It does not have the lubricating characteristics that Wd-40 or 50-1 premix has. If you got the engine running on starting fluid it would greatly increase the liklihood of damaging rings and cylinder walls. It is also not good for the bearings. Get a mist bottle and fill it with 50-1 premix. As far as the starting problem goes, make sure that you correctly hooked up all of the wires to the coils and power source. Even though the plugs spark it might not be strong enough to start the engine.

Re: motor wont start

WD40 isn't any good as a starter spray anymore since the too out the propane as the propellant. It still works pretty good on diesels though.

WD-40's current formula will not burn. THe old formula used propane as a propellant.

Like John said, get a sqirt bottle with premix and spritz it in the carb.
