motor wont start

Hello,<br /> I have an evinrude 5.5 horse power engine and i am sure this sounds like a dumb question but i really dont know much about motors, so here it goes. I just pulled it out from over the winter and got it all situated and when i went to pull the cord to start it, it didn't move far at all about an inch and my guess is it has something to do with the fly wheel but im just not sure what to do. is the motor locked up?....can you turn the prop with your hand? or is it stuck?

it is locked up and i can not turn it with my hand

hold on actually the propeller turns but when i pull the cord to start it it is locked and wont move

you will need a puller to get the fly wheel off.the napa store might have this tool. i purchased one from the napa a month ago.i have used a block of wood and a hammer before..but im not recomending it.

you will see a magnet on the inside of the fly wheel..make sure it is clean..also check the coils..the coil is what the plug wire start at.look for rust or corrosion.

But was it in gear when you turned the prop?<br />Put it in gear and see if you can turn it then.

to sbn: yes it moves but only like a half of turn each way

Sounds like the engine is locked
