Motor wont stay running

Got a motor that won't stay running.
Cut it down to a fuel issue.
Pulled the carbs and did a rebuild.
Started it up and it ran longer than my initial test.
But eventually you could tell the that motor was about to die.
It started picking up in RPMs then put put....dead.
I opened up the drain valves and absolutely no fuel drain.
Ideas anybody?

Model and serial number of engine?

It's likely a fuel pump issue or a line is plugged. You could even have a leak in the fuel line and it's suckin air.

WHAT MOTOR? YEAR? HP? the speeding up, is running lean just before quitting. does sound like fuel problem.

2003 Johnson 55hp Military Outboard. J55MLSTS

Before I pulled out the carbs, I ran the motor and pumped the fuel bulb. motor still died. Next I kept choking the motor and it stayed running so I went ahead and did a carb rebuild. Could it still be a fuel pump issue?

start with checking your compression and spark. yes, did you remove the jets and clean them. did you use new carb kits? recheck the float. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=244013
