Motor won't stop

I could not stop my 1962 28hp outboard using the stop switch. I have decided to replace the switch and move it to the front of the boat as I have forward controls. The problem is that after removing the old switch and testing it with a millimeter it seems to be working ok. I don’t have time to rig up the new switch until the weekend and am trying to find out what other issues could cause this.
The only other cause that I can think of is a faulty earth possibly on one of the coils as pushing the stop button made the motor run rough (maybe running on one cylinder)?.Is this possible and if so can you use a millimeter to confirm this or do you have to remove the flywheel.
If someone could advise me on what and how to test for possible faults and reduce time and effort on my part it would be appreciated
I have only just finished repairing the lower unit and was testing the forward and reverse gears when this new problem arose. Hopefully this will be the last of the problems for a while so I can do some fishing
Regards Kevin

That motor has two sets of points, coils and condensers. The point wires are connected together(not grounded) to kill the ign. If your grounds to the coils were bad, it would not have spark. Likely one of your point wires is broken, between the switch and the motor..

Not sure what you mean by points wire as I'm not too good with electrics. I have checked all visible wires from the switch to the motor and all look good. Obviously can't see the state of the wires up inside the magneto. Hopefully replacing the kill switch will fix the problem if not I will pull the flywheel and go from there. The motor starts and runs well, it just it wont stop. Pulling the choke dosen't work either as this motor has no problem consuming extra fuel

There are two black wires coming out from below the flywheel (not counting the spark wires). Connect those two wires together and the motor should stop. That is what the switch does, only remotely.

If it does not stop, then the wires are broken internally or not connected. It would be rare for them to have a problem, but hey I guess it is old enough.

Thanks FR will do that. When I was given the motor we found one of the wires on a coil had been rubbing on the crankshaft and was almost worn through, that's what made me think there could be a similar problem occurring now.
