motor won't turn all the way

I recently picked up an old Bayliner Capri and put my 85 hp Johnson on it. The steering ram would hit the port side of the splashwell not allowing full travel. I cut a hole there to allow the arm to go through thinking that was all it needed. Now I have found that it still won't turn any further. It turns way over the other way. I didn't think there was any adjustments to it but apparently there is. It is a Teleflex rack and pinion single cable system. Anybody know how I can fix this?

My phone bit the dust. I'll post pics when I get a new one. Meanwhile, do you have any ideas? With motor on different boat I did not have this problem.

What year 85hp? Does the steering cable go through the tilt tube? If it does not have tilt tube steering, it will not steer hardover to hardover. If you change the geometry so it will, it more than likely will have problems in another area, like won't full tilt for instance. That's just the way it is.

1973. (85ESL73M) with tilt tube steering. When the rack gets bolted to the pinion does the motor and cable need to be at the center of their travel? Seems like it would have to be. I've not messed with it yet since I dont know much about it. It is exactlythe way I got it

Are you using the correct link arm on the steering? They come in all lengths and bends. Maybe yours is the wrong length.

steering link is what came with motor, worked fine on other boat with rotary steering. two holes on steering arm, makes very little difference which hole is used

Maybe not much difference, but the hole closest to the motor (rear, aft) is the correct one to use. It will make some difference.

I'll check that and change it if it's wrong
