Motorcycle starts but dies thirty seconds later

So, after sitting for a few months due to the winter went to start the 80 up again. It's definitely a fuel delivery issue. I mounted a clear fuel filter and it's empty. No gas is getting into it. The petcock I think isn't opening. Can I just replace it with it non diaphragm pet clock then further down stream install a fuel cut off switch? Might be the easiest thing to do here. Thx.
