I will be in the market for a 15 hp outboard. Has anyone (not associated with iboats.com, please) had experiences (good or bad) with purchasing from them? Thanks for your help.

Re: Motors from Iboats.com??

I bought a 2002 4hp a year ago.
Dad bought a 6hp about 14 months ago.
No problems nice motors.
Mine didn't have a new spark plug though. :(

I'm not real sure how the warranty's work.
Somehow the selling dealer, not iboats, holds the warranty. I don't know what restrictions are on getting service done under warranty. It could be a real pain to have to transport your motor 500 miles to get it fixed. But the warranty card is addressed to Mercury Marine, so maybe any dealer could service it.

I would ask iboats how this works.

But the prices are good, and our 2 are working fine.

Re: Motors from Iboats.com??

All Merc/Mariner dealers are authorized to perform warranty work, no matter who sold the unit. It's also policy that no dealer can refuse to perform warranty work on units sold by other dealers. Nothing is said about "when" this service must be performed and many dealers will put units that were purchased elsewhere on the back burner in favor of their own customers when there is a significant backlog. Rigging and pre-delivery issues are the responsibility of the selling dealer and not Mercury Marine. If there's a rigging problem or the motor was not correctly set-up, the non-selling dealer that's performing the work will charge you to correct the problem. Then you should refer the bill to the selling dealer for reimbursement. When a third party enters the equation, it can get sticky. I'm sure one of the iboats staff will be glad to explain their policy regarding that aspect.

No one else has purchased an outboard through I-boats? I really need to get one within the next couple of weeks, and am exploring all options. Thanks for your input.

Re: Motors from Iboats.com??

iboats did a survey a few months ago, to see how many of the regular forum users were/are also customers. There were more that had purchased outboards. THe problem is, that this forum thing has over 35,000 members, but only a 100 or so that are here on a regular basis. People come and go, so it is hard to get good survey results.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy from iboats again.
