Mounting a Teleflex steering kit

I just put (for the most part) a Teleflex kit on my boat. However I quickly noticed that the "complete steering kit" has nothing to mount the steering rod to the motor. Does anyone have any idea how to do this? For what it is worth, my motor is a 1965 Johnson outboard. I noticed a nut on the top end of the steering rod that can only be there for something to mount to the boat. I appreciate any advice you may have!! Thanks!

Re: Mounting a Teleflex steering kit

right here at iboats.com or www.westmarine.com or www.boatersworld.com or almost any boat / marina store

i got those pics from boatersworlds website

the white mount bolts to the transom of the boat and then CLAMPS onto the tilt tube, which is the tube that the steering cable goes through and then screws onto. the newer motors made after 1976 had this tilt ube built into the motor mounts, so as to eliminate the need for the clamp.

i have a 1972 evinrude and i hated using that clamp block thingy, so i had my tiltube WELDED to the front of mt motor ,on the mounts, just high enough so it still alows full tilt of the motor. usually can be done in less than 10 mins and cost less than the mount itself , which by the way is about 70 dollars, and the tube is 20 dollars

Re: Mounting a Teleflex steering kit

That's what I was going to do after finding the prices of them! Do you know of anyplace that has pictures of what it looks like (either a handmade hookup like yours, or the actualy teleflex kit actually installed properly), or would it be possible for you to take some and post them or send them to me (mcmullen.6@wright.edu)? I don't even know how it is supposed to work entirely, so I am scared to just go welding/drilling on anything!

I planned on using a plumbing flow-through nut, screwing it onto the teleflex nut, welding a bracket on to it, bolting that bracket to the transom, and then bolting the hole on the extender to the bottem of the motor.

It sounds like your way would work much better, so anything you could tell me would be fantastic! What kind of pipe did you use that has threading that would fit the nut on the Teleflex extender?

I need to see a system that is actually working correctly...

Thanks Mike!
