According to hummingbird the piranah max 170 has thru hull capability. I bought one to mount in the bilge of my 1990 20' stingray cuddy. It shows a depth of zero. Do i need to keep a few inches of water in the bilge to activate the transducer. I glued it to the bottom with epoxy. Also if i do put water in the bilge will it pick up air depth on the trailer.

I take it you didn't test your location before mounting?

Re: mounting a thru hull transducer

Transducer signals will not transmit thru air, including bubbles in epoxy. Since you stated you epoxied the transducer to the hull, I'm assuming you are talking about a shoot-thru-hull transducer. It is recommended that you select a location for the transducer and then weight it down with sand bags and run some water in the bilge area and then take it to the lake and try it out. If all is well, dry out the bilge area and use a slow curing epoxy (less chance of air bubbles) to glue to the hull. Since you have already glued to the hull, if you have put in a lake and it did not work, you may have to pop it out of the glue and find a suitable location, if there is one, for your hull.

To test a transducer location on dry land all you need is a one qt. plastic Ziploc and a rubber band. Put transducer in Ziploc and fill ?-3/4 full with water. Zip up bag the best you can. Twist top of bag around transducer cable and secure with the rubber band.

Turn on sounder and put in manual mode. Point transducer toward the ground at roughly the same height as it would be installed in the boat to get a baseline readi. Adjust gain until you get a depth reading. This is your baseline reading.

Now place the transducer in the location you want to check. If the location is good, you should get roughly the same depth reading you did earlier. If not, adjust the gain until you have a depth reading again. Pick the location with the least amount of gain

You need to put your boat in the water to see how it works. I assume you haven't done that yet?
