I haven't found it by searching and the owner manual is useless, I ordered a service manual but,

have to get my engine bolted to the boat today.
What size bolts would be suitable?

I have a 1/2'' drill bit and suppose the bolts ought to be slightly under that diameter to fit. Would galvi hardware be fine?

Do NOT use galvanized fasteners under any circumstances.

The info you're looking for is probably in the shop manual, but is always shipped with a new motor, including a drilling template.

Where did you look those parts up?
Can I order parts from that same source?
Having a hard time finding any reference for my engine, its J150WCLR
Johnson 150 commercial , 1994, 20" leg , counter rotater prop.

epc.brp.com
Look on the midsection page.
Compare some of the parts, as they may be different now that you have posted the model number of the engine.

Jones, You may purchase any fine thead 1/2" Stainless Steel bolts with nylon locknuts and washers. These are plenty strong for mounting your motor.

BTW - if you boat on fresh water, you can use galvanized bolts and nuts. Here on the east coast, the dealers install motors with galvanized bolts to save a few dollars. I change them out only because of the salt water.

Thats what I suspected, this ain't nasa rocket science but with outboards being a bit if unknown for me I am checking here first.
I looked at 1/2x5 at home depot this mornin but they were coarse thread so I didn't bother with them. I saw the new e'tec motors are delivered bolted to engine pallets with galvi bolts and locknuts.

I noticed the previous owner had the engine installed with only the 2 lower bolts, not sure what mfger engine he used but it was a 140.
Is that possible, does the top of some engines mount's 'lip' over the transom top?

My j150 has a slight lip but it doesn't look anywhere near deep enough to hold it for my concerns. I'll be drilling for all 4 bolts.

Thanks for the parts link , great info as usual.

You don't need fine thread bolts at all. HD bolts are fine, just make sure to use Nyloc nuts. I repeat, don't use galvanized. BTW, I never had a motor mounted with fine thread bolts.

Re: mounting bolts, 150hp

Jones, In the 70s motors had clamps built into the transom mounts. They only needed bottom bolts. As the 80s and 90s approached, the clamps gave way to hooked transom mounts (no thumbscrews) and then the OEMs dropped the clamps and hooks for what we have today.

BTW - fine thread bolts are normally used for mounting outboards. They have less chance to loosen and are a bit more adjustable. Course thread will work just fine, if you cannot get the FT.
