mounting bolts

Just replaced my 50 hp outboard with a 115. The old motor only had bolts thru the top holes of the bracket that go thru the transom in the splashwell. My question is this...do I need to put any bolts in the lower holes? It would be difficult at best because of lack of access to put a nut and or wrench on the inside of the bilge area.

Re: mounting bolts

A 115HP is pretty near 400 lbs. and I'd recommend installing those 2 lower bolts. Good Luck!

x2. You can install an acess port in the splashwell, makes it allot easier to get to those nuts on those bolts. When your done, just use a good marine sealant (4200) to seal it up.

Is 4200 available anywhere else but marine stores? I'm not too close to a marine supply type place.

Re: mounting bolts

My jon boat motor (90HP Yamaha) has silicone rubber under the fender washers and nut and bolt heads for motor mounting bolts, been on there since it was new in 1999, never had any leaks or problems. You can buy silicone rubber in a tube anywhere, works fine. Good Luck!

Re: mounting bolts

I'm curious what boat could go from a 50 to a 115hp safely? (Unless it was way underpowered with the 50hp)

And don't forget to buy/use Stainless Steel bolts, nuts, washers...anything else won't last.

16 ft silverline....looks like it was way underpowered...the rating on the boat says up to 115 so I figured why not.

Re: mounting bolts

Also...a friend says its OK to use lag bolt for bottom holes rather than going all the way thru....any truth to this theory?

No way!...Stainless Steel bolts with nuts and washers is the only way to go. Good Luck!
