Mounting GPS and Sonar

My lovely wife bought me a Garmin 498c Gps because my other chartplotter turned south. I have a 20' CC Scout with a 175 oceanpro. Anyway, I ran the cable for the transducer and mounted the unit on the console with no problems. When I went to mount the transducer, I noticed a bracket on the transom where it looked like another transducer was mounted. So I took off the bracket on the transom thinking that I could mount the new transducer in the same mounting holes. When I took the old bracket off, there was water dripping from the screw holes. I left it alone for a couple of days thinking it would dry. I checked it today and there is still water coming out of the mounting holes. I also blow some compressed air in the holes today hoping they would dry so I can mount the new transducer. My question is, should I worry about the water dripping out of these mounting holes? Also, can I use a standard silicone to mount the new transducer or should I use a marine sealant?

Thanks

Wet wood transoms will eventially rot. The leak maybe right there at the bracket, or any other fitting below the waterline. Do not use silicone. Use Marinetex 4200/5200.
