Mounting GPS/Sounder under windshield

Hi folks,

Just received my new GPS / Sounder (Garmin GPSMap 420s) and due to limitations with the boat and mounting bracket, the only space I have where it would work is directly under the windshield to the left of the helm and next to the frame (aluminium frame). Would that intefere with the GPS's ability to track satelites?

My units have allways worked under the windshield even with full canvas up


If you have any dought just power it up before you drill holes and see how well it sees the sats

Been there done that, I found placing it under the winsheild was to easy soooo i got busy....

Just one thing, i found if you want to use WASS you or i did that is, have to use a external antenna.......but that may be due in part to where i live, that is in the upper north west..

No problemo, should work just fine under the windshield.

My 60 CXs tracks in the first floor of my 2 story house, so I say a little glass and a strip of aluminum is not going to stop it. I also use my 60csx in my boat and the bracket is set up as you say, under the glass, close to the windshield glass.

Hi folks,

Tested the unit last night and the location will work. Thanks for the responses and suggestions. Installed the transducer and that was fun, (not - spent most of 2 hour routing the cable from back to front in extremelly limited space. I now know how mice feel---ha!)

One more question though, when I disconected the old unit that had been installed by the dealer I noticed that they used the starting switch as a point to splice in power and ground with not in line fuse. Is that a safe thing to do or should I run separate leads to the batery. The wire that comes with the unit is only 4 ft long but has an in-line fuse, so I am inclined to use the same splicing points that they used for my old unit. Any thoughts?

I connected mine to the "depth finder/accessory switch"and used the inline fuses supplyed with the unit as they are a requirement of the install


My unit required(Lowrance) that you are able to shut off ALL power when it was not in use so i found that swich to be the best way to go in my boat



I find that i will be adding a second battery and new cables and fuse box at the dash as the voltage drops to about 10.8 during engine starting and this to LOW and the unit resets
