Mounting Outboard on boat?

I have a fiberglass boat that I want to mount my 86 johnson 50hp on. The transom is solid and I want to keep it that way so I need to know the proper way to do this.

Such as, drilling holes for the mount bolts, sealing the old holes (what kind of water proof seal and how to apply), sealing the new holes around bolts (what kind of water proof seal and how to apply), any wood treatment needed to prevent rot in holes drilled. Like I said I want this to last a long time so I want to do it the right way.

Your help is appreciated as always!

3M 5200 slathered on the bolts and as much in the hole as you can get.

Don't use 5200 on the transom bolts. It may damage the gelcoat on removal because it is a strong adhesive. You only need a sealer so 4200 is a good choice as is Boat Life Lifecaulk. The Johnson-Evinrude rigging book even states not to use urathane sealers like 5200.

See your J-E dealer and have him order the rigging booklet for you. It is inexpensive and starts out with the basics on mounting and rigging a motor correctly.
