Does an outboard motor need to be mounted dead nuts on the center of the transom or can it be off center a bit to accomodate a trolling motor mounted beside it?

It would help to know what boat you are working with,
and what size outboard.

You will surely get some answers from folks familiar with them.

Are you talking about bolting the motor in place with bolts through the transom on a larger boat or just mounting it with the hand-twist clamps on a smaller boat? In the latter case, you could experiment with different set ups.

In either case, I would not go far off center, although a little might not hurt, depending on the boat. Too far off and the boat could become dangerous and prone to tipping.

center the main motor, if not it will badly effect performance and handling.

I would think you might have issues keeping her straight if the motor was much off center.

It will crab and you'll feel it in the steering wheel.
The center of force (aka thrust) needs to be divided evenly on both sides of the keel. Imagine running with one trim tab stuck down and you've got it.

I totally agree with tashasdaddy and others, need to be centered on a "V" hull. It really doesn't matter on the kicker. My kicker sits all the way over on the port side of the transom on a bracket.
