007.jpg002.jpghi i was wondering,,i am ready to mount the outboard i bought on the boat,,,,the boat is a 1989 four winns 150,,,,,,,,and the engine is a 1969 mercury 65 hp,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,now the mount holes in the boat did not match the engine they were spaced wider so i filled them in,,,,,,,,,,from where the engine mounts to the bottom of the boat is 20 inches,,,,,,,,,,,the engine from the mount to the bottom horizontal plate is 22 inches the next one up is 20 inches ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,so i guess the question i have is can i drill new holes and just mount the engine or do i need some kind of special plate?

Re: mounting outboard

I would say you should be fine to drill new holes and go... but just to be safe i would create another piece of plywood the same shape as existing transom and attach while installing new motor,.. Seal it well and you should be good!.. It cant hurt and would only be extra secure... just be sure to seal wood and holes well....

Re: mounting outboard

online outboards .com has a diagram for mounting an outboard.
The most important thing is not having the cavitation plate too high.
Too low's not as bad but you could live with it.J

You should be fine a most of those older Mercs were 20" shaft length. You can put a 1X2 under the transom clamp if necesary to raise the antiventilation plate a bit, if necessary.

Re: mounting outboard

Because you have an old outboard, the bolt pattern in those days were different...Not sure when in the 80's all motor manufacturers went to the standard bolt pattern which you have currently on the boat.. I can tell you that I paid $50 for the factory metal template for drilling holes.. Here is the reason. I have sold many motors to people with the smaller bolt pattern upgrading to a newer motor. The template sits on the transom and the holes have guides that won't allow you to drill the holes at the wrong angles..Trust me that you can hang to motor on the transom and drill it..The angle will be close but off and you will end of making larger holes than you want..See if you local shop would loan you theirs... I bought one and have used it a number of times of both aluminum boats and fiberglass boats....really the right way and least painless in drilling accurate holes
