I ordered part no 35-807172A1 for my 1992 4.3 merc I/O to replace the in line fuel filter setup. I have followed the directions but can't seem to get the filter setup connected to the fuel pump as if the metal connector is just a bit too short... its close, but doesn't seem long enough to thread on. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks!

The biggest problem is The metal fuel line from the pump to the carb doesnt allow much movement there, and the lack of space, where the fuel pump bracket is mounted on the motor mount doesnt allow much play on that end. Could I use rubber and/or plastic lines? I know theyre used in auto applications pretty often? Its not my first choice but I just cant get the darn threads to get close enough.

Yes - you can use A-1 type marine fuel hose. Is that your best bet? Don't know. But you can use the rubber fuel line with appropriate fittings if you want.

No you really don't want to use rubber line (marine rated or not).

Steel hoses can sometimes be what I call "flex fit", as you have to flex them to get it to fit.

Try this and see if it works out for you.

Unbolt your fuel filter housing and pull off the fuel filter, get your metal lines started in, and thread them 1/4 to 1/2 way in. Remount the fuel filter housing (you may have to flex the fuel line a bit) and bolt it down. Then tighten up your fuel line fittings with a flare nut wrench, then screw your filter back on. If you do it in that order it should go for you.
