I got one of these CMC Vertical Extensions http://allinflatables.com/shopping/cook/ve.html to raise my 40hp 2 stroke long shaft outboard on the transom of my inflatable. I installed it yesterday but I'm not sure if I should use 6 bolts (3 on each side) through the transom or if the 4 I have now (2 on each side) is enough. I used 1/2 bolts with 2" washers and lock washers. The two additional bolts could be placed on the top about 3 inches from the other top transom bolts on either side. I am worried the extra two bolts and holes would do more to weaken the wood transom then they would to help keep the motor on but I am not sure.

Thanks for any advice.

Re: Mounting without the outboard clamps

hi there
I have a 50 hp 225 lb honda mounted on my futura. I am sure that the 4 bolts that I have through the wood transom are plenty good to keep it there, and I also have a long shaft and had to raise the motor 3 inches so that the motor is not resting on the top of the transom. The bolts I used are fine thread 1/2" high grade galvanized double nutted and with 1/4 " aluminum plate on the inside of the transom to prevent the washers from gouging into the wood. As long as you have the bolts backed up well and tight you should be fine, I would just watch for any flexing of your brackets at the top of the transom. If it does flex then I would try putting the other 2 bolts in.

happy boating

Excellent info thanks you! I do not have the backing on the inside that sounds like a good idea. I was wondering about the washers cutting into the wood after a while. I?ll do as you did, and probably upgrade my hardware, and then take a look for flex and inspect a little after each trip to make sure all looks well.
