Moves very slowly in Reverse

My boat used to make a hard thud when put into reverse, but it would still go backwards with varying speeds. One day while fishing the boat all of sudden just stopped going backward. We looked at the shift linkage and tightned it, and then put it back on the water. Now, the boat does not thud when put in reverse, but it moves extremly slow. I have to rev the engine over 6k rpm's to get it to barely move backwards! The propeller is turning, but it barely moves backward. Forward seems to work just fine. Any idea what the problem could be?

Don't know..Didn't check the hub on the prop. Is it possible for it to go bad all of a sudden. And if so, why forward and not reverse? By the way, I do remember seeing a lot of stuff (looked like gas/oil, maybe) in the water before it went out......

Hey Artsy...Problems with the mix-master?

Couple questions here. Did it "thud" in forward? If so, the idle rpm was way to high. With the idle rpm at the correct idle and "snapping" the engine in gear, there should be NO thud. Just a gentle engagement of gears.

Yes, a prop hub can go "just like that". What you will see is, at a certain throttle, the engine will rev up but you will not gain any speed and more than likely will loose speeed until you throttle back.

Just for grins, check the lower unit lube for signs of metal. If ya' got a bunch, don't go near the water until ya' have the lower unit checked out. Keep us posted on what yer doin'. The guys here are great and can help a bunch.
