This Spring, I inherited a new mooring as a result of purchasing a property on a lake in northern New Hampshire. The water in our mooring field is rather shallow, so it's customary to leave the mooring caps in the water during winter and fish the chain up with a rake or other device in the Spring.

My mooring some how moved during the winter beyond the boundary of the mooring field and required repositioning. I rowed out one April afternoon in a rubber raft to, first, attach my marker, then figure out how to move the 250 lb cap. My boat was not yet in the water since I feel April is too early for Northen NH, but a few die hards had already dropped theirs in the 46 degree water.

Along came my neighbor, willing to help, in his beautifully prepped-for-the-season Sanger. "More than enough power to move a mooring" he boasted. He told me to hop in, and take the controls while he hand-held my mooring chain for the move.

The split second I put it in gear, he slid right off the freshly waxed rear of the boat into the near icy lake. He set a new speed swimming record back to the boat, then immediately recommended shackling the mooring to his boat for the next attempt at moving it.

He was right.....the boat was plenty powerful enough for the job.
