Moving Pee Hole in Inline 6 (1150 1970)

I've got a 1150 from 1970 where the #1 cylinder overheated because the prior owner ran it with a bad impeller.

In pulling off the water cover jacket, it is obvious that the #1 cylinder doesn't get nearly as much water as the lower cylinders. I saw in one of the old posts where one guy was moving the location for the output for the peehole near the top of the motor, by the #1 pistion.

My question is, would moving the pee hole up near the #1 cylinder get any more water flow in that area?

Thanks.

Hi there,
I don't have much experience with the merc's, I just got my first one a few months ago. I've been thinking along those same lines. My reasoning is, I don't think that would hurt anything, and I think that it would at least help to reduce the clog factor in the telltale. Also, if you do have kind of a weak pump, I'm thinking that you could eliminate a big air bubble way up there at the top that way. I'm just kind of thinking out loud here, someone who knows more about how the water circulates in these things is sure to be along. I'll be interested to see what opinions show up.
Best of luck!

I would be thinking more along the lines of adding a temp gage or a buzzer than moving the pee around.I would think that would be the best warning against overheating. Mercury put that pee outlet there..probably for a reason.

jim, Moving the telltale will not change how the motor cools. Moving it up will let you see if the #1 cylinder is getting water however. Adding a water pressure gauge will let you monitor the cooling of the motor while driving.

Later 1150 had the telltale between the 1 and 2 cylinders. See if your motor has a plug there.

Ironically, the #3 cylinder breaks more often than the #1 due to cooling or detonation issues.

Adding a water pressure gauge does not guarantee the engine is cooling properly. It only proves the pump is working. A temp gauge or the temp warning buzzer tells you what the actual engine temperature is. Just because it is pumping water does not mean the thermostat and bypass valve (if the engine has one) is working.

Silvertip, I agree with your reasoning about the temp gauge, however, those old inline motors do not have thermostats, so they do not have any normal operating range. They run dead cold at idle and warm at cruise and hot at WOT. You may be reasonably sure that if the motor has sufficiant water pressure, it normally will not overheat, hence the need for a pressure gauge.

Years ago I had a temp gauge on my inline six. It never read any temp but all the way cold.
