hey guys and gals. i just removed the head assembly off of my 1966 18hp fastwin. then i tried to spin the prop with my hand. it spun pretty easily. then put it in gear and now it takes alot of effort. is this normal? should i be worried? previous owner changed gear oil before i got it so im not really sure what condition its in. any advice is welcome and appreciated. thanks

Re: moving prop with hand

Define " A lot of effort" Does it take a wrench with a two foot cheater bar or just more effort? With no head it should turn pretty easily. If you are an able mechanic to remove the head assembly, you should definitely remove the gear assembly and check it out.

well you can do it with your hand. it's enough pressure where two hands is nessecary. no wrenches or bars needed. i guess a seal kit should be ordered then. thanks

You still have the drive shaft and the water pump in position?

If so you are trying to turn the pump several times faster than the prop due to the gear ratio. The pump is dry too?

It is certainly not going to spin freely. It is going to take a fair bit of effort to turn it.
