Hi everyone,
My Merc 01 Carbed 150 hp is at 2.1 MPG (4300lb boat). How much improvement would a Opti or a Verado make? My 01 outboard runs like new. Would hate to switch, with out a significant improvement in MPG's.
Thanx in advance!

At wide open throttle, all three of those engines (assuming the same horsepower) will burn an almost identical amount of fuel. The Opti and Verado will likely show economy advantages over your carbed engine only in the low and midrange speeds. And for the difference in price, you will need to burn one heck of a lot of fuel to ever begin making up the difference. The Verado is a "bunch" heavier than what you have now so any economy improvement is offset partially by increased weight. A 200 HP Verado is in the 650# range. Your 115 is 348 and a 115 Opti is 375. To make this fair, a 200 Opti is 497# and a 200 Carbed is 406. So a Verado is like having an extra person in the boat -- all the time.

I posted this information a few days ago. Although it doesn't compare the engines you are considering, it does compare technology (E-tec, 2-stroke, and 4-stroke) fuel economy and performance. Study it carefully before spending big bucks in an attempt to save money on fuel.

Re: MPG: Merc 150 carb vs opti vs Verado

i have a 24' aquasport with a 200hp HPDI yamaha and i get a good 4 mpg when cruising at 4000rpm. dfi 2 strokes are day and night difference from carbed 2 stroke. i have no smoke, no smell, no mixing, just start and go. i know this is true cause i also run a 200 hp carbed merc on my mako, and ive even taken them both out at the same time just to check this. DFI wins hands down
