Just bought some Quicksilver gauges for my '84 Mariner 50 Hp.
The MPH gauge has a barb fitting for at small tube, how should I hook this up? On the motor somewhere or to a sender off the transom? Also, any suggestions on the tubing material, what should it be made from?
Thanks for your help.

It sounds like you need one of these,

http://www.iboats.com/mall/index.cgi?prod_id=4606&current_category=speedometer &cart_id=964910248

along with a length of tubing to run from the speedometer to the transom. The pitot will mount to the transom hanging down below the boat. You can see the base for the pitot at the bottom of the transom near the right hand bunk. (sorry for the small picture size)
Re: MPH gauge hook up.

You want a plain old vinyl tube to hook up to the gauge and pitot. The pitot has to be able to swivel up if it hits something in the water, therefore, PVC will not work. You want to mount the bottom of the pitot even with the bottom of the stern on the starboard (Right) side to avoid prop wash from throwing off speed readings. I believe the ID size of the tubing is 1/4", but not sure as I use electronic now. Any auto parts store can cut you a length to fit.

Like this:

web page

Re: MPH gauge hook up.

Rick,
I was talking about the soft flexible PVC (nuematic) type tubing. The nylon I've used for mechanical oil pressure gauges and is pretty stiff and hard.
Still wondering about the small tube and water reaching the gauge. Now that I see the pitot, does the gauge really work on vacuum?

Re: MPH gauge hook up.

The gauge is simply a pressure gauge. Water enters the pitot and compresses the air already in the tubing.

Take the pitot to the auto parts store and have the size matched up.

web page
