I have an MR drive with a leaky trim cylinder.
It's the type with internal lines.

Can I replace the one trim cylinder with one from a Alpha 1 with external lines?

thanks

Ayuh,..... It would no doubt be Better to swap sets of rams, rather than mixin', 'n matchin',.....

The older round rams are 1" bores, the larger later rams are 1, 1/4" bores,....
It'll work swappin' just 1, but it could also cause bindin',...
Donno for sure, never tried it,...

Good to know, thanks for the prompt reply.
If I get them I'll swap both then.
Good to know they will fit.

thanks

Ok, I picked up the trim cylinders with all mounting hardware.
They are part/casting #'s 14034A3 (starboard) and 14035A3 (port) off an Alpha 1, the cylinders measure 16-3/16"

One problem though, the extended length is 27.5" between the pins which I think is 3/4" longer than the original 45706A14 which had cylinders that are 14-7/8"
Unfortunately I never did any measurements of the old setup.

Now when the drive is fully up I'm concerned I might have an issue.

Here's a picture of the bell housing in relation to the gimbal ring. I can insert a thin piece of cardboard between the two all around the top part of the bell.

Here's a picture of the cylinder touching the gimabl ring. If I lower it a 1/4" then i have clearance between the cylinders and ring.

I'm thinking of shimming the cylinders on the pins so they stand out from the gimbal ring and don't bind.
Are there any other issues that I'm missing?

Thanks

Ayuh,.... My new knowledge for today,.... I never discovered this fact before,.....

Maybe a later longer lower pin,....
Probably better than grindin' some room on the ram, 'n gimbel ring,....
Though, those rams are round in the workin's inside,...
Some of the squareness, 'n flare on the bottom could be relieved abit, as well as the gimbel ring,...

Probably a good idea to get in the habit of not goin' Full up, but instead just mostly up,....
Like I said, ain't been here before,... swapped in the other direction,....

It's funny how old stuff has a way of educating one!

I was thinking of making a mark on my trim gauge.
I don't need it to go as high as it does.

From what I've read it might only be the 14034A3 and 14035A3 castings from later alpha ones that are the problem.

When I have time I'll rebuild my old ones and try and sell these.

Just an idea can you adjust the trim limit switch so they won't go so high ?

Good idea!

I was thinking of trying that myself
Might very well go that way.

I only go dead slow when I'm trimmed up high anyway so that might work well.

I'll see how accurate my trim gauge is for tilting. I don't need to tilt the full height anyway.

thanks

Update.
Managed to sell them for what I paid and got to keep the 2 braided lines that I can use someday!

The guy that bought them had both of his split all the way down the whole cylinder over the winter.
Water I guess?

I vaguely recall a Merc service bulletin about grinding the gimbal ring at the bottom and the top to allow clearance for these bigger rams. See if I can find it.
