MR outdrive trim tab set screw stripped and rusted

I have a 1984 Mercruiser MR and cannot remove the zinc trim tab to separate the lower unit. The set screw is rusted and stripped so the allen head wrench just spins. Any ideas how to get this screw out? Maybe drill it out?

Drilling is the easiest way, or you could melt the old anode off with a torch (DO NOT breath the fumes)

Andy, I had the same problem. Mine was 5/16 allen and the wrench slipped. I took a 3/8 allen and ground the six sides so I could DRIVE the wrench into the bolt head. It took several grind jobs (a little at a time). Drove the ground 3/8 allen into the bolt head and it got a grip.

You said (set screw) mine is a 7/16-14 allen bolt. Hope we're talking bout the same thing.

I've used a cutting wheel on the anode with good success.

Thanks for the tips guys. I started by drilling and it did not go so well. :facepalm: Still can't get the bolt off. I think I'll try an ez-out tonight, and if that doesn't work switch to the cutoff wheel idea and go at the anode.

if i have a stripped out allen headm i try a torx bit close to its size and hammer it in before i drill.. just thought id share.

I finallyt got the trim tab screw out using a drill bit and and ez-out extractor.
Thanks for all the advice.
Now for the water pump and full bellows job. BTW, my bell housing is cracked and leaking thru the water pickup housing. Found a decent used one on Craigs List and will buy it tomorrow.

I had the same problem and drilled it out. Buy a good drill bit for this and it's pretty easy.
