Sounds like dating advice someone gave to me once......but it is getting warm and I am off to buy some muffs for a merc 165 from 1975 approx. is there any recommnedation of product? cheaper the better, it will just be to test if it starts, no major running.

keep an eye on the hose connection. my muffs will pop the hose connector loose if too much pressure is turned up on the supply hose. bad feeling to hear the motor running and see the hose laying on the driveway with water running out.

Mercury makes a set that has a pin that goes through the water pickup holes in the drive and clamps together. Never heard of any problems with them. They go for around $20.

The cheaper spring loaded U-shaped ones work fine, just be careful they don't slip down the drive. I usually hear about 3 or 4 motors a year that fry the impellor or the whole motor because the spring loaded muffs slipped down below the water pickup holes.

That is true, you should make sure that they stay in place after the engine is started....
I find they stay in place though.....
I never leave the area when the engine is running.....
