Muffs on a 79 evinrude?

I don't see why not. It has thru the prop hub exhaust, and the water pickups are in the right spot. I like using water muffs that have inlet hoses on both sides.

Yes it will work, they need to cover the intakes on each side of the lower unit. 3 holes each side, usually with a little screen in each

Not sure, It will not pump with the muffs. In a barrel or on the lake it works fine. I have and 87 40 that works just fine with the muffs. Thought maybe the older ones would not work on muffs

Put it on the muffs last night. Ran about a minute and no water out telletale. Changed impeller afterwards (havent tested new one) but everything looked good when i opened it up. Going to flush upper unit tonight. Will it hurt to start it up with a hose taped to the pickup tube?

shouldn't hurt it, dont get crazy with the water flow though... the impeller does not make much pressure.... water hoses make considerably more.

when you say pick up tube, i assume your talking with LU off? for that as long as engine in correct orientation (upright) i have not had an issue. I often check for blockages with compressed air or hose water that way.

Thanks guys, Changed impellers, flushed it out with a hose and some mud fell out. It is pumping strong on the muffs. Let it run for about 10 minutes and head temp got to around 140. (cheap infared gun).
