Muffs or no Muffs?

When I got my boat back from having the new motor rigged, the tech that did PDI with me advised me to flush out the motor with muffs on the lower unit instead of the hose flusher next to the trim buttton. He stated that by doing this alows the motor to warm up and allow the thermostats to open, and this would allow water to be moved through the whole engine and not just certain parts like the hose attachment. I thought to my self this makes sense and did it. I did for about 10 minutes and the alarm went off, the gague showed it was the temp. What should I do to flush the motor? use muffs or the hose? Also, he said to tape up the pick uo under the cavitation plate too, this would allow more water to circulate. The motor is a 2003 DT225 with 4 hours on it, thanks and happy boating.

hello
if you dont tape off the sub-water intake the pump will suck air causing overheat and possible pump damage. use the muffs and turn the water on full force.
now that you have overheated the motor and while its cold retorque all the headbolts and exhaust covers.
good luck and keep posting

I did tape off the bottom water intake. New set of muffs too, should I use the hose instead or both or what?

hello
use muffs held in place with a bungee cord around the leg. use city water at full force with a minimum 3/4 ID hose. well water and 5/8 wont work:) :) I tried. did not work. it should be enough to cool it. most the flush hoses located at the power heads dont work well and some will allow the pump to roast.
good luck and keep posting

Re: Muffs or no Muffs?

can you get you hands on the oval shaped muffs. Normally when u buy them they are quite loose fitting. squash the metal band in the vice to squash them up. this will make them a really snug fit. For some reason these muffs work 100% better than the round ones. When connected you will see 2 other holes emit water on the bottom of the leg this indicates the water is getting to where it should. Now start the motor and check the water flow. Good luck :)
