I’m new to the boats (own it for a year only) and have question about how to run on muffs properly.
In order to get water pump going do I need to put into the drive(forward) mode or it is ok to run engine only without engaging the outdrive?
Here is my boat info:
Bayliner 1985 5L V8
Stringer 800

Thanks

Alex

Re: muffs question

You dont need to put it into foward or reverse. When the engine is running its pumping water.

Re: muffs question

Hi Alex!

The gears and drive shaft in the upper drive unit are engaged all the time driving the water pump. Only the gears in the lower unit engage during shifting.

Place the drive all the way down.
Connect the muffs over the water inlets.
Turn the water on, not full forced.
Make sure the drive is in neutral.
Start the engine, don't let it go over 1500 RPM, and try and get it idled back asap.
Look over the stern at the drive and make sure water is streaming out of the "pee hole" that cools the ball gears.

Hope this is what you are looking for.

Re: muffs question

Also running the water at full pressure is not needed.Just a steady flow and the impeller does the rest..

(Kagee types too fast)...lol
