As I was tuning up the engine, the 2nd time I started up the engine the water muffs slipped back. The engine was ran for about 2-3 seconds and I shut it off immediately because she wasn't peeing. Do you think any damage was done in the period of time? I went to look at the muffs and somehow they slid back. I fixed them and made sure they were suctioned on good then I started it again and it was peeing fine. Do you think that the engine got too hot in that period of time?

Probably not and probably not. You have a good 15 seconds before things start going south. But if it hasn't been changed in awhile anyhow ... well, a water pump rebuild is never a Bad idea. ;)

if it was really 2-3 seconds, then I think it'd be fine. The issue isn't just whether the motor overheated (which it wouldn't that fast), but whether the impeller (rubber) got overheated and melted (which could cause a subsequent engine overheat). The impeller can be melted in 10's of seconds... Most service manuals have pictures of what impellers look like after being run without water for 30 seconds, 45 seconds, 1 minute.. etc. etc. On the other hand, even though 2 seconds may not be long enough to do any damage, if you don't know when the impeller was last changed, it's probably due anyway. Consider it part of the tune up. They are wear items at the best of times... X 10000 if they don't have water.

The person I bought it from had replaced the impellar last year, so I would guess that I would be ok this year and replace it next year.

Thanks for the response, I was hoping that short time would not do damage. Now shes ready to go, she ran awsome yesterday after sitting for a year. I did all the regular maintenance and sprayed deep creep in the carb and she smoked like a forest fire while that stuff did its job, but she runs great.

just watch the pee stream. and i hate running fast, and keep looking around making sure it's peeing. i do it everytime i go put for 5 or 10 minutes, and then periodically. passengers, just think i'm a safe driver, observing other traffic, they don't realize i have a mirror for that.
