Murcury 500 50hp 1977

I would like to know if it is normal for the prop to lock up in both directions in reverse. I thought that it would act like forward gear in the sense that it only locks in one direction.I am afraid to put in reverse with the motor running. Please help.

In reverse the prop will not turn more than 1/3 of a turn in either direction on that motor.
