Sanded and soda blasted and then using compressed air the paint kept peeling off with the air so I'm gonna strip it down to bear metal. What primer should I use for rustolium With epoxy rattle can paint? It looks like they have regular primer and self etching. Should I match the primer brand to the paint? Also is acetone enough to wipe it down? I was reading old posts about a 50/50 vinegar water mix

Prepping my outdrive for paint. I got most of the paint off. A few people recommended Muriatic acid. I tried it full strength. It was smoking and bubbling. I let it sit for a minute or 2 before I got nervous and flushed the crap out of it with straight water. I thought it would leave a clean surface for paint but it has a fine dust on some of the surface? Wondering if I should follow up with a baking soda/water spray to neutralize or if straight water from a hose is enough. There are still some white pitted areas (not deep) I'm wondering if I should hit it again with the acid. I don't want to dissolve my outdrive LOL. It sure is easier than being covered in aluminum oxide media from blasting. So basically how safe is muriatic acid for a quick rinse on a bare outdrive

Muriatic acid is strong stuff. Likely too strong at full strength for aluminum.

Get some nice course, medium and fine waterproof sandpaper and a bucket of water. Sand her down, hose it off, after dry, spray with self-etch primer, and then topcoat.

Sanding is not that hard, even by hand.

Hand sand. Self etching primer and rattle can. Several coats. Light sanding in between coats. Did mine years ago. New decals are available to.

That acid is too strong for aluminum. It would be best to try to neutralize it.

I stripped my outdrives down to bare metal about 10 years ago . . . I think I used mostly paint remover and then a combination of wire wheel and sanding to get it to bare metal.

Don't tell anyone, but I used Interlux Interprotect EP2000 as the bare metal primer. It worked really well.

I'm trying to get most of this white corrosion off. If it's not all completely off will that cause the new paint to flake off? Also after Using the Muriatic acid and hosing it down when it dries there is gray dust on the outdrive? Kind of looks like tiny bubbles. You can see it if you zoom in on pic. Will spraying the dust with acetone and wiping it down with a rag be sufficient before primer?
