I know this sounds stupid to ask but Im technically new to fishing from a boat still. (second season) I was told both that music in boat while trolling some 40 feet deep with downriggers was not going to affect fishing at all. Then was told just the opposite...
What do the iboats community think? Just wanting to catch more salmon this year. :)

We usually catch more fish with the radio on. Playing whatever station picks up the best. We just use a battery operated boom box set to a low volume on the dash.. Might just be coincidence, but it certainly doesn't hurt anything.

I think you will get mixed feelings on this issue. Lots of people actually go fishing both to catch fish (if lucky) but also get out of the noise and sounds of anything else but the peaceful serenity of a quiet time on the water... But then there are those that enjoy some music as well... I have different opinions at different times about music while fishing...

Natural presentation would be my goal. Sound travels a long way in water so a hull vibrating with human sounds (bases and tweets) wouldn't seem to be a natural presentation. But then there's a lot going on in Lake Washington and the Sound. I'd enjoy the subtle sounds and sights around me with a close eye on my rig.

I don't know about the fish and I don't care. I like peace when I fish. That's why I avoid places with lots of people and people sound.

I strongly agree with JB. But I do know that some times fish are attracted to noise and sometimes it scares them off.

Bananas are not good either.
There is a friend of mine that has a charter boat with a sign that says "No Bananas". For the heck of it one day while fishing Turks and Caicos, we used one as a skirt over a rigged ballyhoo (dead trolling bait). Caught a nice size Wahoo with it. By the way, we always had either Jimmy Buffet, Barefoot Man, or Capt Sam Crutchfield on the stereo.

My fishing buddies swear they catch more fish with music (and only CERTAIN music) but this captain likes peace and quiet on his boat (turn your damn phones off too). I get enough noise off the water, thank you very much. Waves slapping against the hull with the quiet hum of a 4 stroke kicker is all the music I need.

Re: music and fishing?

A member of our fishing club is a hydroacoustic researcher for the US government and has studied your question at length.

He gave us a presentation last year about the affects of sound on the water environment. He presented recording he had made at several depths of people interacting in a boat above. At 30 feet, the conversation of the people above as very clear. The music was the same way. Boom, boom, boom of the bass line was exaggerated. You could clearly hear people walking on the deck. The worst was when some drops a hatch cover onboard. A very sharp, bang……

How it affect fishing varies by the ambient noise levels. During the week when ambient noise levels are low, any sound can make a difference. On the weekends when ambient noise levels are high, they seem to be much more tolerant of noise in general.

Well... the fish at the lakes I fish at must enjoy my music then because they bite just as well if the music is on as they do if it's off. lol

Personally I think it has to do with if the fish are use to a bunch of noise on how they are going to react. But how I react is a different story. The world is a clamorous place and fishing or hunting is my way of getting away from all the racket. As much as I love music, (been a guitar player since the late 60's), for me silence and fishing are synonymous with each other. This is the main reason you never see me on the water or in the woods on the weekend when most others are out...only on weekdays. :victorious:
