Hi all,
Just getting into this boating world with a '89 Searay 220 OV.
4.3 LX merc V6, Alpha One, Gen one.
I've began my spring maintenance and repairs with help from this great resource here.
My newbie question is :
What are the "must own" tools for doing my own repair work.
I am pretty resourceful and have a fair collection of mechanics tools, but I'm not surer what I need to buy to do things like Gimbel bearing, bellow work, and impeller replacement.
Thanks in advance for any recommendations

With the merc, You couldnt go wrong with some 12 point sockets and a 1/2 inch allen wrench.

Most of the stuff in my on-board tool kit are tools that i find myself using over and over while working or tweeking the boat. Asside from any specialty tools for your boat a good mechanics tool kit and a good electricians tool kit are nice to have. Don't forget the WD-40, duct tape, and hammer either:)

Re: "Must Have" tools

Thanks for the input guys but I'm really wondering which "special" tools do I need?
I bought Hinge pin tool.
Do I need Bellow expanders , Special socket for shift cable, or Gimbel installer?
Or are there easy ways around these?

I find the one indispensable tool I can't fix my boat without is my visa card. If anyone finds a work around for that one let me know.

I bought the hinge pin tool as well .THEN I find out all I needed was an allen wrench.. I brazed a lug nut to the end of a 9/16 deep well and got the shift cable nut off saved $30.00 or whatever:D I jury rigged a bellows tool out of a couple pieces of wood, made into scissors..screwed a couple L shaped brackets on the end and attached the aft end of the exhaust bellows. But im out of work and had time to putz with all that. All depends on what your time is worth, I guess......

+1

In the water less than a week and pulling mine out.... atleast once a year.. thankfully it's early in the season so out of the way.

Duct tape is my special tool. Ugly, but it's the all purpose makeshift fixer in a pinch.
